For the Voyager flight around the world non-stop, the key was a water-cooled version of a Continental 0-200 for the main engine. It had a specific fuel consumption of .355 lbs per hp-hr. The front engine, a standard 0-240 was at least 20% thirstier. Dick Rutan was famous for adjusting the mixture to the leanest possible settings as he flew.
