Whenever i had a car with distributor on It always would set the timing at idle to about 10 degrees.
Gen4's have coil packs and static ignition timing is set by the crank shaft position sensor under the timing belt cover.
On Mazda site some members would mod the mount for that
sensor to advance base timing but I have not hear of that on Gen4's on TN.
