Those original handles are prone to breaking... often.
My friend's Diesel Golf, we had to fix 3 of 4 handles from when his dad owned it, to when he safetied it. And then two more broke again after that. The handles are made out of pot metal, and that inner mechanism on the inner handle/lever tends to break, so any workaround you figure out will probably give you less grief.
