I would try one of those, with turbo..td04 brand new today is $239 delivered complete...thousands and thousands of them, thanks to modern subarus.

In fact I am putting one on my old subaru, eventually, because they are that cheap..all for 1psi of boost, let the rest blow away, to make up for a supercharger.

the golf with piggy backing, maybe a hacked extra injector...hey...you could really make something there. My only gripe aside from real cheap stuff in the body, was the lack of real air for the big bad diesel.
