None of my cars have a heater core blocking valve. I have heard of it on some cars though. The temp lever controls a flap that either blocks off the heater core or exposes it to the car interior. Setting it to hot, even with no fan on, you can tell the difference. My cars' warmup times are about the same summer or winter with the heater off. Turn the heater on and it takes around 1 1/2 times longer to warm up. So I always leave the heater off till the torque converter locks indicating it is out of warmup mode.

Still freezing here and we still have snow on the ground in places. I plan on it being this cold till late May or early June. Snow coming down in May is common.
