I wish I had pics of some of the loads I used to carry on my bike. Lumber lashed to the top tube was not uncommon. I did resort to walking the bike when hauling 4 X 8s, though. I'd clamp a 4' scrap of 1" X 2" on the handlebars, and balance the plywood mostly on the seat, steering with the handlebar extension, which also protected the brake cables.
