Pholostan, an MPGuino or similar instant FE meter will help you, so that you know how much it is consuming at the instant, and you should be able to get back to the optimum setting where the engine is not running rich.

My bro-in-law is a engine development tester and he too pointed out the engine running rich when the throttle is floored. This is the reason why the hypermiling commandments call for say 80-85% throttle, to avoid getting the ECU turn the mixture rich. (or so I think ;-)
