The way to think about it isn't as safety margin, but as keeping the stuff more diluted. More oil volume allows longer time until change, due to slower additive depletion, etc.
Call me crazy, but I actually try for mpg with this Jeep:

Typical driving: Back in Rochester for school, driving is 60 - 70% city
