Air dam and belly pan

A few weeks ago I made and air dam with garden edging. I had bumper block and belly pan on when I did it. I found that it really helped with aero. The engine didn't have to push so hard. But kept having heat problems. I was thinking that the air dam was not letting air get under the car to let the hot air that was in the engine bay get pulled out threw the exit duct on the belly pan.

Should I have belly pan and air dam or just air dam?
Any other info about air dam's would help thanks?
