Another option would be to turn it into a serial hybrid. That would greatly diminish the diesel engine power requirements but increase the complexity and required amount of space. Diesel-powered generators are quite affordable nowadays seeing I can get a new 5 kW generator with a '10 kW diesel engine' (in quotes as I somewhat doubt those small single cylinder diesels really are good for 10 kW) for around 7000 Swedish crowns (~$1000). Used they can be cheaper - or more expensive strangely enough. A problem is that such a generator weighs 100 kg while the stock engine only weighs around 50 kg...
