I think full throttle will be the tell tale sign, not much more complicated than that.

a favorite guage of mine is the LOD guage, which tells you the load percentage on the engine. I would assume keeping the LOD guage high in top gear when you need the power is the way to go..Too much on an auto, though, and you downshift.
