I don't know the years but some vehicles have a inline VSS in the speedo cable from the factory. I seem to recall 80's nissans, GM engines Early Toyota EFI....

My 1994 Jeep wrangler has a AX5 trans and has a vss to trigger the speedo. It fits in the same hole as the speedometer drive gear...
