Any Progress?

I am quite interested if there has been any further progress in the A/C controller. I was browsing through Ebay the other day and noticed there are "brushless" motor controllers capable of 200 amps for about 40 dollars + shipping. I assume these are split phase rather than 3 phase controllers. Any chance of doing a bit of reverse engineering to see if these low cost circuits can be beefed up and used on an EV A/C motor? How many amps at what voltage does one have to expect using a 3 phase A/C motor in a ~3000 pound EV? Is split phase possible and/or easier to achieve? I realize with split phase initial motor amps to start would be rather high but maybe easier to implement in regards to timing 2 versus 3 phases. Or is it possible to design a poly-phase controller that uses say 6 or 9 even 12 or more phases just as easy as say a 3 phase device? My thoughts there would be a really low starting current required to start the motor moving using the multiple phasing and added effiency in the motor operation at higher speeds.
