Instead of using it for acceleration, why not use it for cruising and assisting the gas motor? This would still be a major help. How much resistance does a freewheeling motor have?
I just realized I can fit 48V of T105's in my trunk without losing access to the spare tire well. Or any real trunk space. I'd lose the ability to carry couches inside the car, but they could always go on the roof. I could cover it with a carpeted box resembling a sub-woofer, for that 'stealth' look. I've also got several good places to hook a motor into with 4 half shafts, a drive shaft, and a rear differential. Hmmm.
I might have to look into this. (:
