just about anything electronic has leds in it today, and usually they survive when the thing there in is junked for whatever reason. leds do need a resistor in series with them or they'll burn trough, but chances are you can find those too along with your donor led (560 ohm should be ok for 12V) perhaps someone you know has an old computer they're putting out with the trash (the keyboard usually has a few leds as might the power switch)
