How many volts?
Horrible circuit diagram attached. Red = battery on, blue = battery off. Tell drivers to frequently switch off whichever battery is hottest. Keep in mind switch failure mode = welding shut (on). Larger switch contact area (bigger chunk of metal) = lower energy density = less likely to weld. Include an emergency disconnect switch. Copper is good.
I recommend making your own double-throw knife (Frankenstein) switches.
