It's the "pumped" thing... that requires energy,
and there has to be losses... no free lunch and all that.

From what I understand it creates low pressure behind the fan to drawn in air (induction) and then the flow of the air out brings in more (entrainment). I'm not sure if the second part would help create force but the first might.
If not a car, then what about a hovercraft powered by a "bladeless fan"?
