I would suggest a hinge on the front of the yard stick, then a bracket at the top and back.

There are some pins, I don't know what they are called, but they look like the plastic clips that hold many inner door panels on cars, but they are metal and their is another part that goes on the panel that the pin secures to.

I have seen them on some of the eqipment I have at work, should fasten securely for you. They put 9 on a machine I use, I almost couldn't get the panel off to work on it, 4 would have been more than enough.
