However, keep this in mind: if people are using higher octane fuels, the manufacturers can build in more optimum timing, higher compression, and possibly even turbos to get more power from a smaller engine, while getting good gas mileage (more compression = more efficient in terms of BSFC). If they really got fancy, you'd be able to de-rate it to run on regular fuel as well.
