The cheap single layer mylar space blanket material will work quite well if stapled to the underside of the roof rafters, provided that there is adequate venting at the peak and eaves. This creates a natural convection current of air flowing through the rafters that will keep the attic MUCH cooler in the summer time. It is one of the things they are doing in Australia to deal with the record heat/drought they are having.
