If the device shown in the video does indeed work and doesn't introduce garbage onto the sine wave,
it's very likely it would work just fine with a transformer. And of course be a lot safer to tinker with.

Maybe one of those old 20 pound low voltage/high amps transformers that most Hams have stored in the basement.?.
Used to be a lot of those around for computer power, before Choppers became so popular..
