As for the vents you got at the hardware store: That's the kind of set-up new BMW's have (check out this BMW movie, between 1:11 and 1:14).
It works if you want to block the radiator deep inside the grille, but making it flush with the outside of a grille won't be easy. You should also make sure everything is well balanced: I can imagine the flaps could open/close when you hit a bump.
