Why not make a hybrid and pedal it a bit to get it going.Or for assist on a steep hill. It would be much more eco that way. I have had my pedal powered carbon/fiberglass/steel trike to 49mph. A friend won a 200 mile bicycle race by 30 minutes in his two wheeled streamliner after having to push it up steep hills.

Eco is not about using motors burning electricity or fuel. Anyone that uses the internet is burning unnecessary energy. Self included.

To answer your question, there is a 3.5 hp Chinese diesel available online.

Carbon is not that expensive if you do it yourself. It takes a lot of time however. Make your prototype of DOM steel or purchase a prebuilt unit to get the hang of it. Start making your parts from fiberglass and start with non structural parts.
Good luck.
