When my wife and I first got together, I was an avid rider, her not so much. The tandem was a great equalizer so I didn't have to keep waiting for her. As my schedule changed she wanted to ride on her own. So, I bought her her first good quality bike.
She now much prefers it to the tandem and the tandem mostly hangs out in the garage.
