I would imagine that the energy input to wind a rubber band compared to what you get out is quite large and like a garage door spring, if you have a rubber band or a spring in your car brake... you have enough energy to, as the old magazine says, push you up to 3 miles! that energy is being released all at once! if the chain drive on a motorcycle brakes it can destroy the crank case of the engine, imagine the energy stored in enough gasoline to move you 3 miles all lit on fire at once, it would be about the same as the energy stored in a rubber band that could do the same amount of work.
