Any form of stored energy can be extremely dangerous. This is nothing new. Those tanks can take quite the impact before anything bad happens to them. The weak point is the valve/head. I'm sure it wouldn't take much to create a solid protective cage around it. They do the same for EV batteries, gas tanks, the civic GX's natural gas tank...
