Methane can be generated with all sorts of poop: cow poop, pig poop, chicken poop, people poop, too. There are a few sewage treatment plants that do this, and they all could. Landfills can also generate methane that gets collected and used. Methane digesters have been around a long time -- I read about them in the '70's. The good news is that the "spent" slurry has fixed nitrogen (it doesn't dissolve in water i.e. the first rain doesn't wash it away!); making it a high quality fertilizer.
