First off, if I understand correctly, it will only respond to ferrous materials. Also, I had to get the metal very close to register a change. It had a 12v output when it was alone, and a 0v output when there was a piece of ferrous metal close. It had to be very close, as in 3/32" close.
Also, be sure to set your VSS delay to 0
