Hello from northern Illinois

I just found this forum a few days ago, and I've been reading like crazy. I've had a 1998 Jetta for eight and a half years. It's got the 2.0 four-cylinder, manual gearbox and 160,000 miles.

Over the years, the car's mpg has continued to climb for no apparent reason. I filled up today and calculated 30.3 around town over 250 miles. I made a trip into Chicago tonight at 65 mph and got 38.3 for 165 miles. That was with 50psi in the tires, can of Seafoam and 93 octane, and taped-off grille and brake ducts. Next on the list is a belly pan behind the gas tank. I'm inspired by the dude that got 47mpg with his MK3 Jetta. I'd be happy with 40 for now. I'm also expecting my UltraGauge in the mail this week. I look forward to reading and learning more here.
