I think the electric reverse on motorcycles uses the starter motor. A solenoid that engages a toothed drive sprocket like a starter would be a good way to do it. Only issue is if you fall out of the "3rd gear" power band you would need to stop to be able to use the electric motor to get you going again.

or a simpler solution...
How about having the electric motor drive one of the front wheels and the gas motor drive the rear wheel.
