Dunno about the US, but the EU has got massive amounts of farmland for which the farmers get paid to NOT grow anything.
In addition, our subsidized overproduction gets exported to the developing world at dumping prices, meaning the farmers there simply can't compete on price and get pushed out of the market.
Not growing that overproduction means even more land that can be used to grow biofuels, while developing countries can generate their own food & income.
