Front wheel drive would be a drag, but with some fat slicks up front and a total weight of well under a ton you could have an incredible power to weight ratio.
I'm scouring the classifieds for a cheap, engineless metro as we speak. It is probably the ultimate conversion target, its small frontal area and lightweight require less batteries for the same range, less amps for the same acceleration, etc, etc.
