While battery replacement costs may (or may not) currently be the straw man of choice, the fact is that lithium-based battery technologies face a daunting fact: there's only so much of it to go around. As the popularity of that particular technology rises, so will the price of lithium. And so will the price of the tech.

Sad to say, but battery technology is still the major stumbling block to electric cars. (I can't tell you how much I salivate over the prospect of an AWD, 1-motor-per-wheel, fully electronically controlled, Subaru WRX STi.) But the fact remains that, in BTU-per-pound and BTU-per-dollar terms, gasoline kicks a serious amount of butt.

Moral: invest in aero - or battery tech startups.
