Look at it this way.

If you want to lower the roof line and still accommodate the same height passengers, then you have to tilt them - and that results in a longer chasiss, longer doors and a longer roof - all of which add weight - and more weight than would be saved by using a lower roof.

And as we all know, reducing weight probably has the largest effect on fuel economy.
