Aptera said that they didn't try a diesel in their hybrid configuration because they couldn't meet California emissions standards in a small-displacement diesel. I would guess that VW also couldn't get their Mercedes-licensed bluetec emissions on a small displacement diesel to comply. Probably for EU standards as well because the emission regulations for the USA, EU, and Japan are converging.
