How stout do the stalks need to be?

My old Porsche has fat blunt stalks and "flag" mirror housings about as streamlined as a used brickbat. WW2 Spitfire fighter had outside mirror of about the same frontal area and glass size, yet had an aero housing and narrow stalk that flew at 400+ mph without falling off in the breeze, so I wonder why car designers mostly don't seem to grasp the concept of narrow stalks and low drag.

PS: As regards chin spoiler, somebody figured that ~4" protrusion is about optimum.
