Sad to say that here in the US as well without the massive subsidies paid by, drum roll please, gasoline taxes the average commuter bus ride would cost something like twelve dollars each way. Without the cars the public transportation will not work. Of course in the US our cities and towns are often much further apart making mass transit financially unappealing. One light rail spur south of Seattle that was in the news cost something like 6 million taxpayer dollars to build and has 37 riders without much growth expected. If we're ever going to have an inexpensive transit system a lot more thought has got to go into it before it's ever going to be cost efficient and sustainable.
