Reprogramming the ECU with a new set of 'eco' maps is goign to become big business I think.
Having worked in the calibration business for Ford doing emissions and performance work on diesel engines on their small vehicle lineup (Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo) for production models I can say that the maps the cars come out of the factory with are EASILY modifiwed for better econony (but worse emissions). Seeing as the MOT test only measures smoke then this is ok. I think that an Eco map would give approx 10% better economy.
I have a calibration tool for Fords and am going through this process for my Focus. The injection timing maps can be massively advanced within the emissions area to give better fuel economy. At some points it is running -2 degrees timing, and best economy would be 10 degrees.... a massive 12 degrees difference that would give a great economy boost
