Great advice Sentra, carry some extra gas if you want to go for running the tank low. As soon as you feel it hesitating add the fuel, precisely what you said in your post.

My tank is supposed to hold 20 gallons. Even when the car is telling me I have only 50 miles left it still takes only 18 gallons. I guess it would be nice to see a tank go over 600 miles, but is it really worth the stress it could cause to the fuel pump.

If you run out it might help to turn the ignition on several times before you try to start it, or just floor it when you are cranking.
