Possibly. The absence of a data sheet for the opto you used in your experiment bothers me too. The input side of my opto circuit is just a resistor in series with the LED, power from the injector line and ground to the arduino (which is also chassis ground when plugged into the car). That means the LED will be on when the injector is
closed, but that's easy enough to flip around either on the receiver circuit side of the opto or in code.
