Get a $15 shop manual and it will tell you, there should be a fuse that you can pull then at least on the steering wheel there is a little yellow clip that you install that shorts it out so that there is no way it can go off.

From what I have read, if you are wearing your seat belt air bags do very little to protect you, so in a way I agree with your desires but I tend to trust Honda engineers more then others, after all around year 2000 the Honda Civic was written about as having fewer deaths per 10,000 vehicles on the road then nearly any other vehicle on the road, the number of deaths were for both passengers and occupants of other vehicles along with pedestrians.
