From 1990 to 2002 US traffic fatalities are close to 500,000. Now they have dropped from a peak of over 50k yearly, to the present level as the safety improvements have become almost universal in the vehicle population.

Yep, I have driven cars without airbags, seat belts, safety windshields, disc brakes, even without hydraulic brakes. or dual circuit brake systems. Old style windshields that cut your head off when you fly through them, and radio knobs that punch holes in your skull, and metal dashboards. How about no side guard beams so when you get hit in one side it knocks the seat right off the tracks and bends the door out from the inside on the opposite side. How about drum breaks with no power assist so when a wheel bearing fails the front wheel and brake drum just fly off the car completely.

Ever dodge one of them coming at you down the road at 45 MPH, or the car behind them with no steering.
