At the risk of venturing into politics, that's one of my daily annoyances. You're having what seems to be a reasonable discussion, and someone's sure to interject "it's all about the US military starting wars for oil".
It's almost as bad as the way the detection of a few atoms of Xenon-133 trigger the "Omigawd, it's radioactive! We're all gonna DIE!" reflex.
