Problem here is just the opposite. What you're calling "the average Joe" might better be described as "Bob at the bottom". And sure, the bottom doesn't move a whole lot - though I bet Bob & his family probably have cell phones, a 40-inch flat-screen TV or two, a couple hundred channels of cable...

The economy isn't your bimodal distribution with lots of low-wage jobs leavened with a few multi-millionaires. There are a whole lot of people living closer to the average than your Joe Sixpack. Who do you think buys all those new cars? If it was just millionaires, everyone but BMW & Porsche would be out of business.
