Um... I fail to see the problem, Dave...
You've got to gear up the engine's input.. So instead, run the motor direct to the trans, and change your output with a jackshaft. That gives you gearing, and moves the output to the correct side.
You could also flip the whole thing around and run the motor backward... Bit the gears probably wouldn't be happy with that.
