EOC has a surprisingly large effect on mpgs when you're hypermiling. If you're averaging 60 mpg with EOC P&G, engine on 1/5 of the time, and averaging 30 mph, you're using .5 gal. on a one hour, 30 mile drive. If you NICE-on glide, your engine idles unnecessarily at at least .15 gph for 4/5 of that time. For a fuel-sipper like my Scion's 1NZ-FE engine, it drinks an additional .12 gal. in 48 minutes of idling time. My 60 mpg (30 miles/.5 gal) EOC P&G drops to 48.4 mpg (30 miles/.62 gal) NICE-on. That's a 20% penalty for engine-on coasting.

My SE-R idled at .22 gph. NICE-on P&G in my Nissan drops a 60 mpg EOC P&G from 60 mpg down to 44.4 mpg. The penalty for idle coasting is >25% with the Nissan, which has idle consumption similar to your truck.

That's why I can never top low 40 mpg in my wife's AT Hyundai Elantra. It has to have the engine running to lube the AT.
