Otmar the guy that made the Zilla modified his car without any horrible undertakings to get at or below 200w*hr/mi of force at 55mph. He just started with some sort of a honda hatchback I think. It wouldn't have to be so perfect. Maybe shoot for 150 miles instead of 200. There is definitely a point of diminishing returns. $100,000 for 160 w*hr/mi, or $14,000 for... oh 213w*hr/mi (150 mile range)
