A shunt would be a no-go for most hybrid owners. It would require tapping into the high voltage line from the battery, or one of the lines between the motor and motor controller. Proprietary connectors and unsafe voltages would surely be involved.
A hall effect setup might work... I suspect Honda electronic load detectors work that way. An inductive pickup would work on AC lines such as the above motor lines, assuming it's done safely.
Wait... Hybrids are all OBD2, so shouldn't this info be available via the diagnostic port?
