I had a 99 ninja 250, and even with 35k on the original engine I still got 70 mpg just tooling around town. It was asking a lot from the engine to do faster than 75mph, however. Just slowing down will give a big increase, if you can take the back roads I'd also recommend that. Mine was very happy in the 45~65 range.
