here is a picture of a stripped-down
iduino which can clip on for serial(ftdi usb) or isp programming, connected to my clone avrisp.
No socket (or crystal), just pins coming out from the bottom. Everything lines up "naturally" that way.
Edit: of course if you are in a hurry just figure out what goes where by studying the arduino schematic (just worry about the icsp to cpu connections) and bodger something up on protoboard.
